I’ve always known that many of the things we had today are practically miracles in comparisson to their earliest versions. What keeps blowing my mind with every new detail I learn is the personal computer and its relationship with the development of the Internet. Eversince mankind discovered it is spread all around he globe, it has felt the need of bonding with itslef. Otherwise, such a big effort wouldn’t be currently done to reduce distances and making the world seem smaller. Personal computers weren’t the first invention that had this in mind, but it has one of the most remarkable developments when it comes to the history of technology.
To think that the tiny laptops we see all the time came from massive mainframe computers isn’t a new concept. People mention this and many more examples when given the chance. However, to think that we have reached a point in - which thinking of how mind-boggling this comparisson should be isn’t as mind-boggling - has to be the most subtle yet remarkable milestones the technology revolution has implanted in our minds. A few decades ago, people couldn’t imagine a device that could play music and let you type at the same time. The computer isn’t even the only device to do this, and these tasks are certainly not the only things it can do. The meat of the sandwich when it comes to computers - at least for me - comes from its development itself.
If no one had come up with the idea of a machine that could perform around 8 calculations per second, I couldn’t be typing this blog entry right now. For the record, I’ve been using a tablet for this; I only use the communal PC in my apartment to type a formal essay. It just occurred to me how insane this could have sounded twenty years ago; just the fact that I have the luxury of choosing where to type this blog and where to double-space my essays. Anyway, if people didn’t keep trying to improve a machine that could perform seven more calculations than the human mind ina second, humanity as we know it would’ve never experienced the power that comes with owning a personal computer. If we examine the battle among brands and who gets which processor with whatever software, it almost seems like these events were bound to happen. It all played out perfectly to bring us the reality we live in. It has played a major role in the open mentality among young people today. The world does hold endless possibilities, and nothing is seemingly far-fetched now. Look how far we’ve come. As conspiracy theorist (no, not that kind of thoeries) and a daughter to two engineers, This will always come to mind whenever a new gadget is announced or when people start talking about their useless old laptops. The world will keep on spinning with or without us, but nothing is going to stop us from showing the world what we can do everytime it spins.
